Based in and around Stillwater, Oklahoma, Red Dirt music is a rising genre of music that can best be likened to Indie genre of Rock 'n' Roll. There is no definitive sound that can be attributed to all the bands in the movement. The best way to describe it is as a mix of Southern Rock, Outlaw country, Texas Honky Tonk, and even a few Mexican influences. Even though Stillwater is the "Nashville" of Red Dirt music, bands hail from both Oklahoma and Texas and most are not based out of Stillwater like their mainstream counterparts are based in Nashville.

The name Red Dirt comes from the soil in Oklahoma and Texas. It is an outstanding feature of the region and comes from the large amounts of iron oxide found in the soil, which give it the classic red tint.
